A new born member, An unexpected life- changing moment
In the year of 1962, Rick and Judy Hoyt welcomed their new member of the family in excitement. They have been waiting for this new member for 10 months.
They never expect the nightmare was approaching to them. Doctor announced the baby boy (Rick) had experience oxygen deprivation at the time of his birth. This gave him no chance to grow like a normal human. Doctor even advised to institutionalize him.
With their strong believe, they didn't give out this beautiful gift from the god. They fought hard to identify the mishap of Rick and tried to solve the physical limitation of Rick so he can live as "Normal" child.
Soon, they realized Rick cant walk and talk. But the good news is, he able to express his feeling with the eye movement. So, with $5k in 1972, a group of engineers in Tufts University built an integrated computer for Rick so he can select the alphabet with his head and express his feeling.
Beginning of Team Hoyt
In 1977, Rick asked Dick: " will you run marathon with me?"
Dick:" Yes, We can"
So, they completed the 5 miles marathon and Dick told his father that when he was running, he didn't feel he is a handicapped.
No words can describe the big laugh on Rick's face. I think it worth all the effort from Dick
Then one day, Rick asked the father: "Will you run ironman with me?"
Dick:"Yes, We can"
Just if you dont know, ironman is the toughest sport games which you have to complete running, cycling and swimming together.
To make Rick feel comfortable during the race, Dick had special made the wheelchair so it can support Rick's spine and he wont fall down from the wheelchair.
There is always a never-give-up spirit on Team Hoyt which brings them to achieve those mission impossible.
The first cycling competition is the most challenging one. The special made bicycle was delivered to Rick one day before the race, they didn't have time to practice and checking the safety.
No matter what happen, they always participate in a team.
Swimming was really something new to Rick. He had been trained as a runner, but a swimmer -- he needed to start as a newbee.
To our surprise, Team Hoyt completed the challenge and here, they step into another level of achievement.
Also adding their achievement, they ran and biked across UK in 45 days for 3,735miles.
Today, they travelled around the world to give speech and promote the Yes, You Can spirit. They help to build the individual character, self-confidence of diable youths.
Rick, as the motivation to Dick has completed his degree landed himself a job.
Dick, the never-give-up father has fulfill the son's dream, get him a chance of dare to dream.
